WHAT:

Drill Class

The Ray Taber Foundation, a non-profit with the sole mission of providing scholarships to encourage and support students, is hosting its annual free Drilling Exploration Seminar at Taber Ranch in the beautiful Capay Valley. This educational event is a field seminar for graduate and undergraduate civil engineering and geology students. It is often called a "day of opportunity", providing the future leaders of our industry with a unique forum for asking questions, getting answers and having a "hands on" experience with the field equipment and testing and logging protocols that have become the fundamental data gathering tools of geo-science practices.

Drill Class

Local universities, led by the geotechnical studies groups at UC Davis and UC Berkeley, will again be bringing 100+ students for this free seminar. The Taber Ranch has generously donated its facilities and grounds to house the event and Taber Drilling has, as they have for 20+ years, committed to donating exploration/testing equipment and field personnel for the day.

HOW:

Ways that you can participate -

  • Presenters: The Foundation is looking for seasoned engineers and geologists to serve as speaker-teachers at the different drill demonstration stations - mud rotary, hollow stem auger, and electronics (CPT and seismic refraction). The "script" is set for each station while presenters add their real-world experiences.
  • Design Firm Sponsors:The Foundation is seeking Company Sponsors from our industry that would like to participate in a "mini job fair", the 4th station of the class, where they will present their firm's background and work opportunities to the students (+25 at a time). All sponsors get their company logo on promotional materials and receive a tax deductible receipt for their donation. Sponsorships are $350 each, all of which goes directly to AEG Scholarships for Students, a direct "give back" and support for the local geo-science community and a gateway to connections with students for internships and employment.
  • Vendors:The Foundation is also looking for industry vendors who regularly collaborate with design firms on geo-technically-driven projects that would like to present their products and services to future design and construction leaders; again, at the 4th station of the class. Vendors are asked to pitch in a tax deductible donation of $500 to support the activities of the day, including lunch for all. Can you suggest an industry vendor and a contact that "should be" at the Drill Class?

If you have interest in volunteering your time as a presenter, having your firm become a sponsor or suggesting an industry vendor, or just have questions about the seminar, please contact the class registrar:
